Job Summary & Requirements  Under the general direction of the Chief Building Official, provides inspections and enforcement of all building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical and/or Fire Codes adopted by the City of West Des Moines for, commercial, residential construction, and rental housing.  Provides plan reviews for the above codes, addresses questions and concerns from architects, general contractors, sub-contractors and homeowners concerning code issues.  Advises the public on acceptable, proven corrections to problems found in the field, and seeks compliance with the intent and purpose of model code standards. 

 The primary focus of this position will be inspection of existing rental housing, and will not include new construction inspection for the immediate future.   

 Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent; 2-3 years of additional schooling; 3-5 years of related work experience; and possession of a valid Iowa Driver’s License or evidence of equivalent mobility.

 Certified Building Inspector or similar certification required within 12 months of employment.

POSITION TITLE: Chief Building Official
SALARY RANGE: $61,648.00 - $95,636.00
Minimum Requirements: This is a responsible technical, administrative, and management work involving all activities of the Inspection Division of the Community and Economic Development Department. Serves as the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) for all Building Code matters. Work involves the supervision of staff in the Inspection Division; final reviews of plans and specifications for all building construction or repairs to ensure compliance with all building codes and ordinances; performs inspection work; investigates and follows up on complaints regarding building and other property related ordinances. Work includes considerable contact with the general public, contractors, engineers and architects. Work is performed and reviewed by the Department Director. Graduation from a four-year college/university with major course work in civil or structural engineering, architecture, or related field; thorough experience in construction; or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Must pass a background check, substance screening, physical exam. Selected candidate must meet residency requirement which includes a ten mile radius on the Illinois side of the Quad Cities within one year of hire date.
