Greg Karow is a staff instructor for the International Code Council and  began as a Building Code Representative for the State of Minnesota, Construction Code and Licensing Division in January of 2002, where his primary duties included developing and leading training sessions at the division’s spring and fall seminar series and providing educational opportunities for building officials, building inspectors, architects, contractors and other interested groups.  He also administered building official examination certification for the division as well as research in code development and code administration.  Greg is an adjunct faculty member for the Minnesota Community College system, teaching various classes in the Building Inspection Technology program.  Previous career paths include 10 years as a building official and inspector for a county in southern Minnesota; positions in the lumber industry dealing mostly at the contractor level; background in the wood truss industry in design, layout and sales.  He also has an extensive background in the construction industry as a carpenter and a general contractor.  Greg has earned a certificate in Architectural Drafting and is a Certified Building Official in the State of Minnesota and holds ICC certifications in Plan Review and Building Inspection.

 

6/6/08JOE BUSCH

Joseph (Joe) Busch, AIA-NCARB is currently the Chief Building Official for the City of Columbus, Ohio.  He also served as State Architect for Ohio and prior to that he was principal of the firm of Joseph F. Busch & Associates, Inc. that was engaged in the private practice of architecture and related engineering services.  His private practice covered 23 years and in total he brings 50 years of practical common-sense experience to the code enforcement field.  In his 11 years as CBO for Columbus, his department has done plan review and field inspection on approximately $14 billion of construction that has virtually covered every IBC use group.

 

Aside from his Bachelors Degree in Architecture from Iowa State University, he holds a teaching certificate from the Corps of Engineering School at Fort Belvoir, Virginia where he taught a basic structure course for two years.  His primary practice took place mostly in Ohio and Pennsylvania but it also included minor work in Wisconsin and Florida.  This diverse experience has served him well upon entry into the building code enforcement field.  He is highly motivated and brings a positive “solution/results” mindset to the enforcement process.

2006 IRC Fundamentals – Mechanical, Fuel Gas, Plumbing, and Electrical Provisions

This course covers the fundamental code concepts contained in the mechanical, fuel gas, plumbing and electrical provisions of the 2006 International Residential code. Although the course focuses on the most important code topics, each of the four areas is covered extensively. Upon completion, participants will be better able to:

 

·    Utilize the mechanical, fuel gas, plumbing and electrical provisions of the 2006 IRC in the performance of their jobs.

·    Identify and apply key code section.

·    Ensure the safety and proper construction of residential structures.

2006 IRC Fundamentals Building Provisions

This class provides an overview of the critical concepts of Chapters 1-11 of the 2006 IRC. These building provision concepts provide a basis for code enforcement professionals correct utilization of the code in all facets of the job. Upon completion, participates will be better able to:


  •    Locate general topics in the 2006 IRC.  

  •    Locate applicable tables in the 2006 IRC for specific reasons.  

  •    Identify code requirements applicable to clear-cut cases.  

  •    Discuss the intent behind a given code requirement.
  •    Identify borderline scenarios as compliant or non-compliant.

2006 IBC Wood Framing

This class introduces the subject of building design as applied to wood-frame building construction. Although centered on building design, also focuses on trusses, framing, wood structural panels, connection details and physical and mechanical properties of wood. Upon completion, participants will be able to:

 

·      Distinguish between vertical loads and horizontal loads.

·      Identify characteristics of wood properties.

·      Describe horizontal framing member designs.

·      Inspect trusses for construction installation compliance.

·      Identify three basic wood panel designs.

·      Explain floor-framing requirements.

·      Identify correct wall framing.

·      Determine size and spacing of ceiling joists and rafters.

·      Identify types of wood connectors.

·      Evaluate the means of egress in assembly spaces.

·      Determine requirements for exit access widths in smoke-protected assembly seating

Presentors:

Vincent J Ellebracht, Senior Engineered Wood Specialist, Field Services Division- responsible for market development in five Midwestern states.  Vince’s duties include educating architects, builders, building officials and structural engineers on the efficient use of engineered wood products.  Vince also observes engineered wood products involved in claims and reports to the manufacturer details regarding the condition of the product and compliance with installation recommendations.  Mr. Ellebracht spent 31 years in the Midwest, 3 years in Europe and 1 year in the Pacific Northwest developing markets for engineered wood products.  While in Europe he represented North American engineered wood at the United Nations, Food and Agriculture Organization.  He also worked to obtain recognition for structural wood panels in European international codes.  Mr. Ellebracht received a B.S. in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Missouri.

 

Jeff DeBartello, Structural Frame Specialist for iLevel by Weyerhaeuser, Great Plains –North - been in the industry for 25 years, starting my career with Wickes Lumber. In 1998 my career landed me with Weyerhaeuser. Has been in various positions including sales, sales manager, structural sales rep, and most recently the Structural Frame Specialist covering Iowa, South Dakota, and North Dakota. Largest geographical area is the Des Moines metro.

 

Lynnae Hentzen, Executive Director/Co-Founder, Center on Sustainable Communities - Born and raised in Iowa, Lynnae attended college in Denver and the Philippines before finishing her B.A. in Sociology at Iowa State University and earning an M.B.A. from Keller Graduate School of Management in Chicago.  She spent ten years in Chicago as an educator and business analyst for various organizations in the metro area.  In addition to COSC, she serves on the Board of Director’s for the Iowa Environmental Council, Advisor to the Iowa Chapter of the United States Green Building Council, and serves on the Green Advisory Board Panel for Traditional Home magazine.  Lynnae was the recipient of the 2007 individual Environmental Stewardship award presented by Metro Waste Authority
